The Faerie Playhouse

Art Collection

The Faerie Playhouse has a large collection of gay art including having the largest collection of paintings by renowned New Orleans artist, John Burton Harter.

Harter documented gay male culture, especially of the 1970s. The collection features several smaller portraits of local gay New Orleanians, larger nudes and landscapes.

Harter’s cremains are in the Faerie Playhouse Memorial Garden.

The Faerie Playhouse also has 4 works by Harold Norse, a “leading gay liberation poet” from the Beat Generation. These works represent his lesser known experiments with watercolor.

Several works by resident Alfred Doolittle and other visitors to the Playhouse over the years also adorn the walls.
